Flame Skimmer

Description

The male Flame Skimmer ranges in color from dark orange to red over their entire body - including eyes, legs and wing veins. The wings are transparent with the inner half of the wings being reddish-brown in color. The female Flame Skimmer ranges in color from medium to dark brown.

We usually observe the Flame Skimmer on warmer days near streams and ponds. We have seen them in the Inland Empire, the San Gabriel Mountains and Foothills, the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests and the Orange County areas. Their size ranges from 2 to 3 inches in length.

We have observed the Flame Skimmer near ponds and streams in most of the areas we visit.
