The male Umber Skipper is an orange-brown skipper with yellow-orange markings on its wings. Their main body is mainly brown with some parts being a purple-brown color. The female is slightly larger and lighter in color. Umber Skippers tend to prefer areas with moist vegetation.
We have observed them while hiking and mountain biking in the San Gabriel Mountains and Foothills in places like Big Dalton Canyon, Colby Canyon and Icehouse Canyon. For a list of sightings of this bug, you can view our Sightings and Observations Log and search on "Umber Skipper".
Their wingspan is approximately 1-1/4 inches.
SubFamily: Grass Skipper.
The Umber Skippers we have observed have always been near a water source like a stream or grounds that are watered regularly.
