Plummer's Mariposa Lily

Description

The Plummer's Mariposa Lily is a California native plant. It is one of the most stunning flowers you will see. It has a bell-shaped flower approximately 2 inches in diameter.

The flower has 3 large petals and 3 sepals. The outer-sides of the petals are pale yellow on the lower half starting at the stem and change to violet on the upper half. There is a subtle splattering of maroon on the petals. There are fuzzy yellow hairs on the bottom half of the inside of the petals. There can be several flowers on 1 stem.

The stamen are noticeably large and pinkish in color.

The bloom period for Plummer's Mariposa Lily is May, June and July.

Since the Plummer's Mariposa Lily is considered endangered, I feel very fortunate to have found areas with several of them.

Family: Lily (Liliaceae).

Field Notes

We have observed several Plummer's Mariposa Lilies in the foothills of Glendora, San Dimas and Claremont.
